End of month one: arrival in San Francisco

OK, I realize I'm way behind, but I am still alive and well, and have been having a great time. I left Seattle one month ago, and just rolled into San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge this afternoon. I checked into a hostel, left my gear behind, and spent the rest of the afternoon randomly roaming the city streets on my bike, wandering without any real direction, having fun cycling in urban traffic again on an unloaded bike, wishing I was on a fixed gear.

Ended up riding down Lombard Street (you know, the curvy one), although given all the SLOW cars, I was barely creeping -- I think I'll have to do it again late at night to be able to zoom down it on the bike with out all the congestion. Also rode through part of China Town, through Union Square, along the Embarcadero, and wound my way through a variety of other neighborhoods. I doubt I could ever retrace my route.

Anyway, the plan is to stay in the city a week or so to explore and figure out what I want to do and where I want to go from here. Continue south by bicycle? Hop on a plane/train to San Diego and cross into Mexico? Fly to New Zealand, as all the cyclists I've met who have been there have been encouraging me to do? Not sure yet.

I also plan to try to write up some notes about the last couple of weeks (the rest of the Oregon coast, the redwoods, Highway 1 in California, etc.), now that I have easy access to power and the internet.

Tonight will also be my first night in a real bed for a month, I've been camping the whole time. Should be interesting. More later.
